The eagles are at it again: Look up in the sky around here in April and the show may be X-rated. Bald eagles do their mattress dancing in the air. They climb to dizzying heights, lock talons then plunge toward earth at roller coaster speeds. Just before crashing, they disengage and climb upward again. It is said that they mate for life; I’m thinking that widow(ers) aren’t inclined to remarry if they have to face this ritual again. In a comment from Fun House Chronicle 1, Archie wrote, “the word for ‘grumpy old man’ is curmudgeon.” It made me wonder if there is a word for ‘grumpy old woman.” My sister suggests crone or harridan. Here are definitions for all three:

Curmudgeon: A bad tempered, disagreeable, or stubborn person. A killjoy or wet blanket.

Crone: An offensive term that deliberately insults a woman’s age, appearance, and temperament.

Harridan: An offensive term for a woman that describes her as scolding and ill-tempered.

So. One word for grumpy old men and two words for grumpy old women. Anyone care to guess the gender of Webster or Roget?
