Ramblings 9

The eagles are at it again: Look up in the sky around here in April and the show may be X-rated. Bald eagles do their mattress dancing in the air. They climb to dizzying heights, lock talons then plunge toward earth at roller coaster speeds. Just before crashing, they disengage and climb upward again. It is said that they mate for life; I’m thinking that widow(ers) aren’t inclined to remarry if they have to face this ritual again. If you’re interested, Walt Whitman wrote about it in The Dalliance of the Eagles.

For those of you who have not read the comments on my Men’s Club post, you might want to; several folks have left some pretty funny stuff there.

A statement you rarely hear outside a nursing home: “Let me know if you have a BM.”

***

In a comment from Fun House Chronicle 1, Archie wrote, “the word for ‘grumpy old man’ is curmudgeon.” It made me wonder if there is a word for ‘grumpy old woman.” My sister suggests crone or harridan. Here are definitions for all three:

Curmudgeon: A bad tempered, disagreeable, or stubborn person. A killjoy or wet blanket.

Crone: An offensive term that deliberately insults a woman’s age, appearance, and temperament.

Harridan: An offensive term for a woman that describes her as scolding and ill-tempered.

So. One word for grumpy old men and two words for grumpy old women. Anyone care to guess the gender of Webster or Roget?

Posting thumbnails: I can’t seem to post full size pictures on my site. The word press directions only allow me the choice of thumbnails. Niece Linda has to post them for me if they are full size. Anyone have any suggestions about what I’m doing wrong?

Ohhhhhhh to be an eagle… just once. THE RIDE STOPS AT THE BOTTOM.

The BM thing? You’ll hear it if you have a nurse in the family. So you learn very quickly to say, when asked, “I’m just great… perfect… no problems”.

Curmudgeon works for a woman too, I think. It’s almost a synonym for Grampa… so why not Gramma. It’s kind of like a term of endearment. The others certainly could be one… how ’bout Harridone? I think that was my mother’s middle name, if I remember correctly.

So, how come the two female terms are defined as “offensive”, but the male term is defined as “oh, just perfectly okay; who could possibly object?”
