Short Game 24

With all the woes in the world, it’s good to pause and reflect on an individual whose work entertained generations. Larry LaPrise, author of the Hokey Pokey, died earlier this year at 83. In his honor, the Mister, an amputee himself, composed this verse:

You put your left foot in
You put your left foot out
You put your left foot in
And you shake it all about
You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn your chair around
That’s what it’s all about.

Skunk cabbage
As soon as the snow melts, the skunk cabbage starts to grow. A friend, chagrined by this unattractive name, calls it elfin lanterns. But you, with your murky yet fertile minds, may think of another name altogether. Please do share.

I know I am posting less frequently these days. I am fighting with the book which is as personable as a komodo dragon. I joined a writer group this weekend wherein we all call attention to problems with each other’s documents. It appears nobody understands what the fuck I’m talking about. That was sure a lot of fun.

At first glance, I thought you had shoved a banana into the ground.

let me know if you ever need an editor for your book! :) i’m sure after all that fightin’, you’ll have an amazing story to share.

I can’t believe that there is anyone over the age of 40 who DOESN’T understand exactly what you are talking about every day of their life. So many times I have made it through the day because I realized I was not the only one experiencing certain situations. Other times I have just been grateful for the laughs from both you and the Mister. So don’t even think about not writing that book. OK….end of lecture!!

Hi! I’m one of those “ghost readers” who reads your blog fairly regularly but haven’t really commented. I enjoy hearing about things happening around here from you and think are a great writer. I’ve been thinking of starting/joining a writers’ group, but haven’t really any idea what to do, how to organize it or what sort of people to invite to join. Have any advice for a young writer just starting out?

I recently read a book about writing which said that we all need two groups. One to tell us all the great things about our books and one to kick our butts over the things we need improved. I hope you have a group to tell you the great things too… sounds like the last meeting was a little frustrating!
    Good luck

I’ve never seen one before, but I’d say it’s a snow banana. And your reported feedback from the writer’s group just made the book sound more promising.

Why is it called a skunk cabbage? Because it smells pretty?

My family always called them banana stalks. :D

Like banana slugs… only, you know, stalky.

WriterGirl: I saw a listing on the local library for this group. It is of the “kick your butt” school. Each group member gets 6-10 pages of your manuscript before the group meets. Comments are not aimed at overall criticism, so much as executional issues (”too many characters to meet so fast” … “Who is saying this?” … “pov problem here” etc.). Actually, I thought it was quite helpful as long as you take each with a grain of salt. You don’t want to listen to everything or all the docs will sound alike!
This group meets once a month, and members all have different styles and degrees of experience. After each member goes over his/her suggestions, you get that copy of you manuscript back. Keep in mind that really good writers are not necessarily really good editors; I think I got my most helpful comments from a person who is struggling with her book.
I will keep going to this group at least for a while. It feels like the right move for now.

OK, Gina, June Bug, and TinaNZ. Snow Banana it is.
Mister: I should have put something in this photo to indicate actual size. I believe you have just made the men on road crews seem more attractive than ever before.

I recall a lot of things these days out of scale.

Thanks! Maybe I’ll try to get a group together here too of writers like me just starting out. Port Angeles isn’t always the easiest to get things going and my work schedule is kind of crazy, so that has been my past deterrent. Today is looking very spring-ish, but yesterday seemed to be middle of winter… I hope it lightens up a little soon!

I don’t know why I’m updating you on this, but for some reason I feel like you’d be happy for me…so I am, lol.
I hit the 50 lb mark with my weightloss :) After a few weeks of being off the band wagon and not losing anything, I’m back on and losing again. I’m now engaged and getting married in July and have 20 more lbs to lose to feel super comfortable in my dress, so wish me luck! And I’ll send ya pictures :)

WriterGirl: The group I found is actually in Sequim; I checked and it is now filled. But I will let you know when we have another opening. In the meantime, try posting a note at Penninsula U … I imagine they have a public board. Good luck … please keep in touch and let me know how things are going.

Stephanie: I am thrilled for you. Think of 50 pounds as five bags of dog food that you were carrying around all the time. Talk about an exercise program! Since all weight loss comes down to calories in vs calories out, my theory is that simple weight loss decreases the calories out. Hence, plateaus. Please send pix! And tell me, without your muffin top, will Josh still recognize you as sexy?

  15. Comment by stephanie brown | 04/28/08 at 7:23 am

In order to “still recognize me as sexy” he would have had to think I was sexy to begin with! lol and unfortunately i’m sure that is NOT the case :)
But being that I have 60 lbs left to lose, there is still plenty of muffin top there for my fiance to love on…I’ll never understand why men love to squeeze rolls…makes no sense…
    Sending you some!
